Wondering the same thing, I went to my ESPN app to check their schedule and the scores. While they have played a couple of Top 10 schools (Purdue & Houston), the biggest things seems to be their defense and their ball handling. Teams have been shooting over 50% against them this year, and they’ve had a few games with over 15 turnovers. Heck, in yesterday’s game, Delaware even got homered on the foul count (21 to 11), and they still won the game because of their shooting and because they won the turnover battle quite easily.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of gangstas.

They lost two of their better players — Fremantle and Hunter — to injuries. Both are likely out for the season.

I haven't kept up with them, but another one of their guys is out for the year, Kam Craft.

Interesting thing about X's non-con schedule is they only play 1 true road game (Purdue) and 2 neutral games in the Continental Tire Main Event. Their other 8 non-con games are all at home.

If UD gets into the Big East, I will abandon all calls for 15 neutral/away games, UD could schedule all the buy games they want, and I wouldn't complain. That will make many posters happy.

The most mid major of nights. A10 loses games to Brown, NJIT, Towson, Drake( after a 19 point lead), Northern Iowa and LaSalle escaped with 1 pt win over Loyola Md. VCUloses to Memphis which is respectable.

Its sort of a catch 22 though. One of the reasons we have scheduled the way we have is because we don't have enough revenue coming in from the A10 split, (because we are in a weak conference and can't command a decent TV deal). We sell out every home game at 13,000+ and so it is makes a lot of sense to have more home games. Also recall that per Neil the basketball program funds the vast majority of the athletic department (like over 90% if I recall correctly from the article). So arguably, if we were in the Big East we would have a lot more flexibility because we would have more revenue coming from the conference and could "afford" to play more road games.

Since the UNLV thread is closed, I'll put this bit of news here:
From the DDN
“We continue to allow UNLV to focus on their students and campus community,” UD announced. “We are working with UNLV to determine whether the game will be rescheduled or postponed to a future season. Once the path forward is determined, we will communicate with our fans. At that time, we will also share information about ticketing. Thanks for your patience and understanding as UNLV remembers and honors the victims.”

Xavier beats UC for the 5th straight time. In addition Xavier has won 6 of the last 7 and 20 of the last 28 against their rival.

It's so weird for a x fan to come to a Dayton board just to occasionally post unsolicited updates about a school that has nothing to do with UD.

Very solid weekend for the A10.
12-2 with wins over Hofstra (NET 78), Princeton (NET 21), and UMass Lowell (NET 82).
One good loss, Florida (NET 43) and one not so good loss, Charleston (NET 133).

The majority of posts in page two of this thread are all about Xavier. Seems like it wasn't unsolicited at all. In fact, it was very topical. The thread is called "Games of note".
Are these posts weird.
"X-avier goes down 87-80 to Delaware at home."
"I saw some of that game. Xavier looks awful. What happened to them?"
"They hired a cheater as their coach?"
"Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of gangstas."
"It's still fun when they s***?"

Yes, but yours happens to be an exception. The thread is titled "games of note." A Xavier game, unless against a common opponent or A10 school, is not a game of note.

The majority of posts on this page are all about Xavier and no one seemed to have an issue so I figured this was the right place for Xavier updates.
Almost a half-dozen posters had strong opinions and were providing Xavier opinions...up until the point that they won their 5th straight against their biggest rival.

The point is why would a Zavier fan come to a UD board at all. You didn't come here after you lost to Oakland or Delaware. I've never gone to a Zavier board and can't imagine why I would ever want to.

One thing worth mentioning about Xavier that indirectly involves Dayton: the Muskies are 5-5 with home losses to Oakland and Delaware. If this was Dayton's resume', we'd be on NCAA life support. The rough starts is almost meaningless for XU however because there are enough marquee conferences games awaiting in the Big East to still earn a #5 seed in the NCAAs. You are never more than 10 days away from being irrelevant to being in the bracket.
Remember when Indiana lost like 11 of 12 games down the stretch and were still on the NCAA bubble? I think it was one of Archie's teams. You can suck for an entire month, beat Marquette and Creighton back to back, and largely undo that entire month of suck in a span of 5 days.
Dayton does not have this kind of latitude and opportunity in the A10.

The A-10 has some big opponents coming up on Saturday. La Salle and St. Bonaventure playing ranked opponents. And several other big name teams face off against the A10: Temple, St. John's, Cincinnati, West Virginia. And Davidson plays... Lynchburg? Also: Lynchburg?? The A-10's basketball teams should not be playing against non-D1 schools at all (during the regular season).

The IU season to which Chris referred was Archie’s 2nd year in Bloomington. After beating Illinois in early January, they went 0-for-2019 until righting the ship in mid-February. They were awarded a 1-Seed in the NIT at the end of the season, on the strength of their stellar 17-15 record, after having been considered one of the Last 4 Out in the NCAA Tournament selection process.
And yes, that’s why the success/failure of regional teams that are in P5+ conferences is relevant.

Brutal loss for NW.
On the bright side, Longwood smashed Milwaukee on the road last night. They play two more clunkers before our game and should be 13-1 by then, well inside the top 75 of the NET.

College basketball has a lot of head scratching upsets. The 3-point shot and numerous transfers, the game can produce those upsets more often. If you play a best of 7, the favored team will win the series easily.

Including UNLV over Creighton. I wasn't bummed about the outright cancellation until last night. That win bumped them up 64 points in the NET.

The A-10 went 8-5 today against the aforementioned teams, led by Dayton's beatdown of Cincinnati. Not too shabby.
The conference as a whole is now 104-53 on the season; only two teams with a losing record: Fordham & Rhode Island.

Longwood wins again. They are 81 in the NET before today's victory. If they can win a road game against N.C. Central Wednesday, they will be 13-1, and well within the top 75 of the NET.

It looks like the toughest game Longwood played was against St. Bonnie’s, and they lost. Crazy to think they could be top 75 in the NET.

Longwood plays in the Big South conference and made the dance in 2022, losing to Tennessee. They have some talent.

They only lost by 4 at the Bonnies though, not bad. 73-69
And that was the first game of this season for Longwood, they might have been just getting their feet wet.

That’s all certainly possible, but they have gathered a bunch of wins against light competition. Their SOS is 349! Still, I recognize there’s something about learning how to win and gaining confidence. I agree that no game should be taken for granted.

I see that Torvik has Saint Joe's as his first team out. Saint John's is his second team out. So those two are at least in the mix.

This means 2 things:
(1) I’m a St. John’s fan for the rest of this season; and
(2) Mavier is gaining steam.
Why did I call TTDS “Mavier”? Well, if TTUN is “Xichigan”, then the “M” needs a home, so…

The dream of playing a 1-loss top 75 Longwood is dead. They fall on the road to NC Central. They dropped 30 spots in the NET as a result.
Huge day today for both non-con opponents and the A10.

You have to wonder how hot Ford’s seat is getting. Admittedly, NC State is a decent opponent, but everyone in college basketball knows “the book” on him and his teams.

I highly doubt he can survive another mediocre season. His payout is significant, but so too are the team's abysmal results under his watch.

Solid bounce back for the A10 yesterday. 4-0 with a somewhat notable true road win for George Mason @ Tulane.
Must-win for Duquesne tonight if they want to stay in any at-large discussions. All they have left in the non-con is a D2 game.
Another huge one in the non-con slate as the Johnnies take on mighty UConn.

You have to wonder why they gave him such a long contract and/or such a huge buyout. He certainly didn't earn the right to be their coach for 8 years. He is 1/7 now, likely 1/8 after this year. These schools are sometimes way too generous with the deals that they give out. He went to the ncaat there in his 3rd year. Maybe they are satisfied with being a NIT-level program.

St. Johns almost pulled the upset tonight at #5 UConn but lost 69-65 to the Huskies. The game was tied at 63 with a couple of minutes remaining but St. John's missed some critical free throws down the stretch.
What I thought was interesting was three point shooting. St. Johns was 4-18 for 22.2% and UConn was 5-18 for 27.8%. The Big East seems to like driving to the basket and bullying around vs. becoming adept at three point shooting! The refs were letting them play rough.
Now I know the reason why the Oakland coach, Greg Kampe, stated that the Flyers could beat anyone when they shoot the three like they did against his team!

UConn was without Donovan Clingan last night so that certainly helps if you are St. John's.
Thad Matta did not elect to foul up three at the end of the Butler/PC game and he got burnt. I know people are on both sides of this argument but in this case there was a dribbler with the ball inside of the three point line, which is definitely when they should have fouled because there is no possibility of the guy throwing up the shot to draw 3 ft's. As I've said before, in all of the games I've watched in my life I've only ever seen the make the first ft, miss the second on purpose and rebound and score it, once (in a high achool game). However I have seen made three's to tie the game many, many times. Still seems like a no brainer to me.

To foul or not foul that is the question. This topic has been discussed ad nauseum on this board. I'll add to the discussion.

Both Torvik and Kenpom have a preseason bias that takes 15-18 games before it fully diminishes. This is generally a good thing as it prevents outliers from massively skewing the early rankings, but it misses greatly improved teams like Dayton (NET 22, Torvik 48) or Colorado State (NET 15, Torvik 38), or dropping teams like Michigan State (NET 35, Torvik 11).
The rankings usually stabilize around the third week of January.

A-10 went a respectable 11-2 today to close out the OOC.
Top to bottom, the A-10 is significantly improved over last year. There are plenty of Quad 2, and a few Quad 1 games in the conference schedule.

Actually, the A-10 went 12-1 today (and 13-1 for the weekend).
The sole loss was LaSalle at home, losing to Howard 66-71.
The conference ends the OOC season 131-60 - a definite step up from last year.

Not sure if this thread is still breathing, but from what I can tell these are tonight's games re: our opponents:
Northwestern @ Illinois (-5.5)
Charlotte @ SMU (-8.5)
Butler @ St. John's (-6.5)
Bible Studies @ Grambling (no line)
Atlantic 10 play starts tomorrow night.

This thread is always breathing Just haven't been many games of note the past few weeks. With the holidays being what they were, most everyone was playing buy games at home w/ long breaks in between. Things should heat up a bunch tonight; there are some non opponent games of interest like New Mexico @ Col St, UNC @ Pitt, Creighton @ G'town and Cuse @ Duke
W/ the last week being so devoid of TV worthy games, perhaps Niel should approach ESPN about televising an annual Christmas day classic b/w UD and Wright St. With no other games on TV I'm sure many will tune in to watch that classic tilt. I'll set a reminder to mention this again next season

I am so giddy thinking about our home and home next season on Christmas and MLK Day with the 4-8 #180 Net ranked team. Of course once Nagy and his staff read Hawkoos ideas of going 3 or 4 deep with guys dedicated 100% to playing the point and nothing but the point, I am sure their NET will soar (not saying which direction, you figure it all out)

VCU / St. B is a good game. St B looking good. They have big center 6/10 260 named Venning. He will be a load for DaRon and Jacks.

Rough night for the A10. St. Joe's, GW, and Duquesne (if they are to be taken seriously as at-large contenders) all shoot themselves in the foot. St. Joe's and GW especially.
I keep hearing 2-3 A10 teams getting in from the pundits. Who? Maybe the Bonnies? They better find a way to pick up a Q1 win or two. St. Joe's? They have as many abysmal losses as they do quality wins at this point. Mason is in the same boat as the Bonnies, but with slightly worse computer numbers.
No question the league is much improved overall, but this is a 2-bid league max unless one or two of these bubble teams really make a run.

Appears to be a bit of a shakeup saturday in the top 25
FAU (17) lost at Charlotte
Marquette (7) lost @ Seton Hall (their 2nd top 25 win this week)
UNC won @ Clemson (16)
Providence (25) lost at Creighton, Providence's second lost this week plus their best player is out for the year now
James Madison (19) lost @ So Miss
Plus a lot of top 25 teams had scrapped by
(25) Ole Miss is @ Tennessee (5)
Duke (14) @ Notre Dame
Col St (13) @ Utah St
So some potential road upsets/losses by top 25 teams still on the table
In the A10
Mason beat SLU
LaSalle won @ Fordham
Richmond knocks off the Bonnies by 9
Loyola beats Duquesne
GW wins at VCU
Opponents,
Houston won big over West Virginia
Oakland knocks off Green Bay
Longwood wins
St Johns wins @ Nova
Later tonight, Cincy plays at BYU (12), given the strength of the Big 12, we are about to find out if that Quad 1 victory will hold over the next few weeks. I'm expecting it to vanish with as many tough games as they have; but remain hopeful that one can stick. At least St Johns is looking stronger each week.
LSU @ aTm later as well

Our RPI is now up to #4 -- not that it matters which it no longer does.

Unless someone really catches fire, no one other than us has much chance of getting an at large bid. If we play as expected but fail to the win the AQ, that’s about the only way we get two bids. No one else is even close to “ next 4 out” status.

LSU wins at Texas A&M and Cincinnati wins at @12 BYU. Got a ton of SOS help tonight.

Incredible night for the Dayton Flyers non-con opponents. LSU has an enormous jump from 131 to 96 after beating Texas A&M. LSU also moves from a Quad 3 win to a Quad 2 win. Cincy’s win over BYU pushed them to NET #25.
Even Troy upset top 100 App St. and Troy jumped from 227 to 201.

Interesting that Alabama is ranked #6 in the NET even though they are 0-5 in Q1 games. Q1 games are highly valued even if you lose every one.

It’s a little more involved than that but I see your point. There have been many teams who’ve played a very tough schedule but have been denied an at large bid because they’ve lost then all. That’s where Alabama is right now.
