NIT teams

Ok. No one cares about the NIT, but I thought it was interesting to note the teams behind UD playing in the NIT

From A10
Richmond, Loyola and St. Joe

USF with Mike plays at Cincinnati
North Texas with Moo plays LSU
X plays at Georgia
Ohio State hosts Cornell
SMU plays at Indiana State

St. John’s not playing.

Did VCU not get invited, or did they say, “Thanks, but no thanks.”? Same with UMass?

Edit: Thanks for the clarification, CT Flyer.

It appears these teams at least declined:
Oklahoma
St. John's
Pitt
Memphis
Ole Miss
Washington
Indiana

Not sure about UMass. Seems like the NIT could become a thing of the past for P5 teams.

English of Providence and Pitino at St. Johns are not happy campers. And you can add Halloway from Seton Hall to the list.

Looks like Butler could play all their games at home. All the A-10 teams are on the road for game one.

Pitino said that they’re going to get to work on next season. Wouldn’t playing in another tournament help toward that end? I understand if there are financial considerations that are adverse to a school. I just don’t understand turning down the chance to play.

It's a players league now with NIL. The players want to play in the NCAA, not the NIT. Simple as that.

Players are still players. Look at the professional athletes that play for their national teams. Extremely well paid athletes risk a tremendous amount while just wanting to play. I think coaches push their own agendas.

I guess they are worried about injuries and the transfer portal.

I don't know what the portal open and close dates are, but I'd like to see the portal not open until after the ncaat is over. This is so stupid skipping the NIT IMO.

The stupid portal is now more important than playing actual games.

I didn’t even think about the portal. It looks like it opens today. That could give coaches who aren’t in the postseason a huge advantage. Why can’t they just move it back 22 days?

I agree, now not only does the coaching staff have to worry about, you know, prepping for ACTUAL NCAAT GAMES, they also have to worry about a chunk of their roster transferring out right after they lose or even before they lose.

It's almost a disadvantage to be in the ncaat because you aren't totally on top of everything happening in the portal.

NFL free agency doesn't start until well after the playoffs are over, the portal needs to not open until after the ncaat is over.

Fixed that for you

Football is equally bad, there were kids in the portal and signed well before the national championship game.
Kyle McCord had left Ohio State for the portal before they even played their bowl game on Dec 30. At least in that case, some schools are starting school before the national championship takes place, but in either case its a disservice to both the teams still playing their respective sports as well as any kids on those teams that might be thinking of entering the portal for whatever reason and have to choose between chasing a championship or bowl game, or whatever with their current team and finding a situation that fits their future better.

Not sure about UMass. Seems like the NIT could become a thing of the past for P5 teams.
It should become a thing of the past. It is just like meaningless bowl games (all of them but the playoff). "Hey guys come play some exhibition games, risk injury, miss school, etc... to make the NCAA more money!" If teams want to play in the NIT fine but this judgment that gets passed is crazy, I think eventually the NCAA tournament will go away too unless the NCAA figures out what revenue sharing is. I am not saying this because I think there should be revenue sharing but somebody is going to do it if the NCAA doesn't.

Kool-ade Flyer will become famous soon enough
The biggest argument to attend NIT ( like bowl games) is you can keep practicing, keep working with players, etc. Those not playing immediately enter off-season protocol. Also the possibility of being one of a handful of teams that can say our last game was a win.

Does anyone know what the current money payout is for NIT. Is there anything beyond just compensating the teams for their expenses???

Several informative links below...the first one, cougarboard.com, was very detailed but had old info from 2016, but I am guessing that the setup is still basically the same.

The cougarboard.com link covered many details in terms of revenue and expenses, what the schools are required to pay for, which expenses the NCAA pays, etc.

The NIT became less of a meritocracy when they carved out guaranteed invitations based on conference affiliation. Takes the spirit of fair play, competition, and sportsmanship out of the tournament and turns it into an oligarch of inner-circled aristocrats that believe they were born into nobility and deserve special consideration because of their surnames.

Its a farce. Especially when these same teams end up turning down bids anyway. Even the preferential treatment can't appease them. I was okay with the regular season conference champion always having a spot because it was a universal consideration to all leagues. What the NIT has done since then is tarnish their own brand by thinking fans want to see brands rather than great basketball. The biggest brands usually don't even want to be associated with the NIT.

Its like two opposing sides not being in love yet insisting they keep dating twice a week. I dont get it.

The tournament needs to go to 80 teams and the NIT needs to go away.

The NIT, the Humanitarian Bowl of basketball. It is a waste of time, and nobody should play in it. It's past time to dissolve it and have the NCAA absorb some of the teams that would have gone to it in the past.

Then you'll love Devin Carter from PC, Big East Player of the Year.

And I agree. I still watch it every year. But I do wonder if it is just better to add more teams to the NCAA tourney and do away with the NIT.

I'm surprised they haven't added a 2nd set of "first four" games somewhere out west to get 8 more teams into the dance. All the 16s and 15s would play each other for the right to face the 1 seeds then 8 at large teams would square off to become the foes for the 5 or 6 seeds.

I know I am probably in the minority but I don't really think the tourney needs to expand. I get that it is a nice story that every conference champ gets a bid but the result has been to leave out better at large teams. I get that a 16 has finally beaten a 1 and there are upsets every year but I guess the question is, do we have a tourney for upsets, or do we have a tourney to have the best 64 (yeah contraction I said it), teams in the country battle it out for a national championship? I mean is the tournament this year better with Longwood or St. John's? I am not saying Longwood took St. John's' bid, just using two teams we played as an example.

The bigger and more all-inclusive they try to make it, the more likely someone comes along and says, "if you want to play in a real tournament, we want the best 32 teams, you get paid for every round you advance and the players on the winning team split a $5 million purse with maybe $2m to the losing team, etc... If that happens and you don't think teams would bolt the NCAA tourney, I have a controlling interest in the A10 to sell you.

I also want to go on record with my thoughts on the first 4. It is a play in game. In my opinion you are not in the dance until you leave UD Arena with a win. I know what the official NCAA line is but it is BS. If you have to play another 12 seed to see who plays the 5 seed, you are not in the tourney until you win.

You are welcome to your opinion, but every time they talk about Coach Izzo's NCAA streak, they never once put an asterisk next to it and say "well except for that first four game they lost in 2021". Of course nobody made it out of Dayton that year, stupid covid, but I'm sure Izzo's incentive package in his contract for making the dance kicked in w/ that first four as well.

Short of a major breakoff from the NCAA by the power players, they won't go backwards, they will only expand the number of teams to increase the TV package

I fully acknowledge that my opinion is not the official rule. I also fully acknowledge(d) that I am in the minority. It is a tournament game in the same sense that the trophy every member of my nephew's soccer team got at the end of a 3-12 season, is a trophy. It is, but it shouldn't be, in my opinion. The TV package is great, if you are the NCAA. Look what happened to golf, for years the players have been saying, "we should get more of the revenue" the PGA drug its feet thinking "we're the only game in town" and then they found out they weren't and their assumption that the best players in the world cared more about prestige and tradition than money (or fairness, depending on your take), was dead wrong.

We'll see what happens with the tourney. I can't imagine there isn't some enterprising millionaire or billionaire out there, (perhaps a former NBA player), who can't see that the current model where the NCAA gets most of the revenue is ripe for disruption. Revenue sharing is coming whether people want it to or not.

I agree that Revenue sharing is coming, which would cause them to want to expand the poll rather than shrink it to increase the overall pie.

As far as participation trophies, there are now 362 d1 teams. If they expanded the tournament to 80 teams, that would be 22% of d1.

In the NFL, 43.75% of the league makes the post season.
In the MLB, 40% of the league makes the post season.
in the NBA, 66% of the league makes the postseason.

in the soon to be expanded college football postseason, 10.44% of D1 will make their tournament and roughly half of d1 will make some sort of post season game (ie bowl game)

I get that college and pro are different animals and the bottom of college is much different than the top of college sports, but I don't think anyone would think less of the tournament if it expanded to 80 teams. More basketball is always a good thing.

Point is well taken, but I don't think you can compare percentages in a league with 10 times the number of teams as the pros have. The revenue sharing issue isn't with the size of the tourney, it is with the NCAA not wanting to share the money. There is plenty of revenue, it is the sharing where the problems lie. What I am saying is that someone has to be out there thinking OK, if I can get $X from TV for this thing, and I don't have to support a bloated bureaucracy of sports administrators and pay conferences, etc...I can actually give a lot of the money to the players and still make a mint.

The thing about going to 80 teams that excites me is the drive to be in the top 48 to get a bye. The difference between 48 and 49 would become exciting. 12 seeds would become more relevant. I think it would be fun.

There are more than a few good teams in the NIT. I don't think the games are exhibition games. Each game I have seen in the NIT, the teams have played hard.

The quality of every NIT team is better than every 16 seed in the NCAA. *
If you enjoy watching basketball, then the NIT games can be very enjoyable.

I enjoy watching competitive basketball. NIT games have a higher level of play than some of the buy games at UD arena.

I've gone to D2, D3 and above high school games. Are they the same caliber as D1 teams? Most of the time no, but it is basketball and entertaining.

St. Joes plays Seton Hall. Game will played at the Hall's on campus gym; Walsh Auditorium. Seats about 2,500. The Hall didn't want to spend the money to rent the Prudential Center.

I guess the last 5? minutes of Xavier's NIT loss were wild...Sean Miller got a bench? technical foul for stepping just over the coach's box line?...a very, very long review of a goal-tending call with 2? seconds left...and then another controversial call 2 seconds later at the end of the game whereby the refs jogged off the court instead of reviewing the play, apparently the refs were supposed to review the play.

I have not really paid much attention to Xavier this year, but didnt they have a ton of injuries? Either way it's never a bad thing when they struggle

I'll give X some credit, came from 23 down to make a game of it. The long pause was for the goaltending call that was rightly reversed, TV showed a clear block before the ball hit the backboard. Didn't see anything to review at the end of the game, but I could have missed something. It was a very entertaining last 5 minutes, especially the last 30 seconds.

With Xavier's game last night, due to the very short turnaround of the NIT teams not being announced until late Sunday night, and then the NIT game being in Athens, Georgia last night, the team had to fly from Cincinnati to Atlanta and then take a bus from Atlanta to Athens. That bus ride is normally a 1.5 hour drive.

But, I guess the traffic from Atlanta to Athens was pretty bad, so the drive took longer than normal, so the team only arrived at the arena 1 hour and 15 minutes before tipoff, so they had to get ready to play quicker than normal.

I have been to Athens once, that is a small, classic college town out in the country/a pretty rural area, so some of those roads are only two lane roads, so the traffic can get backed up.

I imagine the traffic around Atlanta is bad too.

830 AM on a Sunday morning in late February, 72 mph all the way straight through southbound.

Two weeks later on a Sunday at 6 pm northbound I had to slow down to 52 mph at one point, the rest was petal to the metal.

No I do not believe what I just typed either, but it is true. Just don't tell anyone else our secret on when to hit they city I have despised driving in or through for years.

I watched the end of the game. There was nothing to review on the last play. Whether the X player was fouled or not is not reviewable. X fans just whining because the call didn’t go their way.

I got the feeling that X thought the clock started early and they wanted it reviewed. Not sure if that is reviewable and what could have been done in that situation even if it did.

For financial reasons, they elected not to rent the large facility they usually use,due to expected low fan turnout.Their on campus facility holds about 3400 or so.

Walsh Gymnasium on campus Seton Hall facility:

They normally play at the Prudential Center (AKA "The Rock") in Newark. They didn't want to spend the money to rent the Rock.

I think they play there a few times during the OOC. The Flyers played them there in the early 2000's.

I'm sure they do just as St. John's plays some games at their on-campus site, Carneseca Arena.
I'm pretty sure that the BE has a minimum seating capacity for all BE games. I don't know what the number is.

Nova plays a majority of their games in their on campus facility. Jay Wright preferred it because of the more intimate home court advantage. It was renovated not long ago and is pretty nice. Not huge but a nice facility.

Indiana St shows they are pretty good as they come back and score over 100 to beat a decent SMU team. No D in that game.

Some Big East fans are now claiming that the NIT failures are not related to the power of their conference, and in no way are related to their legitimate gripes over NCAA tournament selection.

The top of the BE was very good this year. But let's not get carried away with the middle of that league.

The top of the BE was very good this year. But let's not get carried away with the middle of that league.
What then does the NIT say about the a10?

It says that on their home court, the BE school that finished 4th squeaked by the A10 team that finished 9th.

St. B AD resigns

I thought this was interesting. Not sure if UMASS said no, but the AD has resigned at St. Bonny after declining the NIT invite without talking to the Coach or Team about it.

I read another article where the StB AD said he didn't have a good read on the fans and alumni and didn't realize they would care about the NIT.

Miller is finding it harder to win when everyone can pay their players and not just him.

Another reason to leave the A10. They can't even attract quality AD's!

Had a seven point lead with under 4 to go.

Edwin Young was the alternate official.

I watched the last few minutes. ISU went cold. The crowd looked big and loud. Looked like a lot of ISU fans were there. ISU has not had a lot to cheer about thru the years. I felt bad for the ISU fans, they finally get a good team, and now the coach is possibly leaving.

It was a home game for ISU, as they are about two hours from Hinkle.
