Smile MSOC: UD Remains Undefeated with 5-0 Win over St. Thomas

The Dayton Flyers men's soccer team entertained University of St. Thomas in the 2022 home opener and made quick work of the Tommies with a decisive 5-0 victory on Friday evening at Baujan Field. UD scored twice in the first 16 minutes and never looked back as they improve to 3-0-0. St. Thomas, relative newcomers to Division-I, remain winless at 0-3-0.

Dayton took the opening kickoff and exerted complete control in all phases of the match -- most importantly time of possession. The Flyers were able to knock the ball around with little to no resistance, affording easy access to midfield before being forced to create some combination passing to find holes in the St. Thomas defense. There were lots of holes to exploit and UST was constantly preoccupied with chasing the ball as the Flyers played keep-away.

UD put the Tommies down 1-0 just seven minutes into the match on a free kick by Andy Sanchez that squibbed inside the near post. Perhaps UST defensive players thought someone would take a touch on it, but it found the back of the net for the unassisted goal to give UD the early advantage.

Michael Adedokun made it 2-0 in the 16th minute when UST goalkeeper Tony Favorite charged out to clear away danger and was whistled impeding the play. It was a decision he likely regretted as defenders were there to slow the Flyers down. Had he held his ground in front of the posts, things might have turned out better for the Tommies.

Joseph Melto Quiah added to the lead in the 21st minute with a missile strike from 25yds that left Favorite helpless to stop it. The route was on but the Flyers weren't done as Forster Ajago made it 4-0 in the 27th minute after a nifty turn-and-touch set up his low strike to the far post.

UD had several more chances to add to the lead but just missed from both short and long range. St. Thomas continued to chase the run of play over the last 15 minutes of the first half and rarely had time to collect and string together more than one or two passes. Dayton did well to recover and steal possession, win 50/50 challenges, and move off the ball to create good passing lanes to keep the Tommies in constant retreat.

Halftime stats underscored the one-sidedness with shots 15-0 and corner kicks 3-0.

The second half was less eventful as UD took their foot off the gas and spent extended periods knocking the ball around without as much urgency to commit players forward and attack the net. The Tommies still surrendered possession to midfield before flashing any pressure on the ball, but did a better job of staying organized and compact to minimize the passing alleys. The roadies almost found a goal of their own on a quick counterattack that got behind the last Flyer defender. Flyer goalkeeper Dario Caetano was forced out of the box to defend the jailbreak, but the shot ultimately hit the left post and was cleared away to keep the score 4-0. It was UST's best and only legitimate scoring chance of the match.

UD maintained most of the possession thereafter but played mostly lateral balls rather than choosing to press the action with more direct play that might unnecessarily commit a turnover and lead to another UST scoring chance. Unless Dayton made an unforced error such as a poor pass or sloppy dis-possession, UST had no offensive punch to generate their own scoring opportunities from the run of play.

The last 20 minutes of the second half were much like the first 25. Overall pace and urgency took a back seat to deliberate play and the Flyers spent the 2nd half salting the result away without much fanfare. That said, Melto Quiah extended the lead to 5-0 in the 71st minute on a terrific far-post feed from Adedokun. The shot from 10yds went under the goalkeeper and tucked far post to finish up the night's scoring.

It was a dominating performance against an opponent UD should have dominated -- which is a good sign as there was never any tense or unnerving moments in the match. UD was ready to play from the opening whistle and did everything they needed to take are of business at home.

Match stats ended up 26-1 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks.

Dayton returns to action on Sunday against Evansville for a 5pm kickoff at Baujan Field.
