The Ides of October

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- October is nearly upon us and with it some actual Flyer basketball. UD has announced “Flyer Fan Fest” to be held Saturday October 16th at 5:00 pm at the UD Arena. While it will not feature the usual Red and Blue game, there will be a dunk contest, 3 point shooting competition and an open gym. Just enuf to whet the appetites of the hoops hungry Flyer Faithful.

In the meantime, here is some light reading to fill the time until then:

-- The following is the best Atlantic 10 preview you will read all day, courtesy of Three Man Weave:

-- “FTS” really would have liked to have attended the Dayton Independent Film Festival on September 25th to see the world premiere of “Eight Nations: A Basketball Documentary” featuring UD’s own Kyle Davis. Here is a link to the trailer. WARNING: It features multiple F-bombs:

-- “The Hometown Coach” Mark Adams will be back for his 23rd season providing expert analysis for ESPN coverage of college hoops. Go get ‘em, Mark:

-- If you are a D-1 AD looking to fill out your basketball schedule, do not book any of the schools on this list:

-- Really enjoyed watching the US dominate the Euros at the Ryder Cup held at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin over the weekend. Here is how Captain Steve Stricker got a group of alpha dogs to check their egos at the clubhouse door and play as a team:

-- Bob Ryan looks back on the sports world of his youth:

-- No, UD Arena did not make the list of the “Ten most beautiful sports venues in the world” but that’s okay, as all of these sites are breathtaking:

-- Here is a great pictorial on the cars of Driving Miss Daisy:

-- Had not watched an episode of “Storage Wars” on A&E in forever and in flipping thru the channels recently noticed that Brandi Passante was flying solo, without her partner/nemesis Jarrod Schulz. It appears they broke up 2 years ago:

-- This tale of the harassment of a Massachusetts couple by employees of eBay is freakin’ unbelievable:

-- As someone who has lived in the Midwest for all of my adult life, this has to be the stupidest article I have ever read on the subject:

-- How would you like having to drive on this road on a regular basis?

-- I worked as an account executive at AOR radio station WYDD in Pittsburgh for less than a year. This represents my proudest achievement in that time:

WDVE was and still is the dominant rocker in Da Burgh. They had an exclusive arrangement with rock promoter DiCesare-Engler to co-present all of the AOR shows at the Civic Arena or the Stanley Theater. For some reason, they passed on Bob Marley, probably because DVE never played his records. I had to convince Rich Engler that YDD could sell out the Marley show if he would allow the station to co-present it. He did and we did. Even got to say hello to Bob backstage. Ironically, two years later Marley would perform his last live concert on the very same stage.

-- The recent passing of comedian Norm Macdonald sent “FTS'' and millions of others down the You Tube rabbit hole in search of his finest material. While best known for his time anchoring “Weekend Update” on SNL, it is as a talk show guest that Norm’s unique brand of humor was on full display. Here are some remembrances and video highlights.

Norm was not an anti-comic

Macdonald was the best worst talk show guest of all time

This piece includes the ultimate Norm appearance on Conan with Courtney Thorne-Smith, who was there to promote her upcoming film Chairman of the Board with comedian Carrot Top. That prompted the creation of these action figures:

Norm Macdonald was an agent of comedy chaos

This includes the famous “Moth Joke” again at Conan’s expense. The geniius of this bit is that it is based on a :20 joke Norm stole from Colin Quinn that he expanded on the fly to fill a 5 minute slot after Conan's producer asked him to stay on.

Here is why Norm was comedy royalty

That’s it “From the Swamp.”
