Unfinished Bidness

DAYTON (OH) -– “From the Swamp” is coming to you today from the Gem City where it is time for the Flyers to take what is rightfully theirs. For those of you not paying attention that would be a payback win vs. the Arachnids on Senior Night, which will set them up for a nice run in the Bernadette McGlade Invitational in Brooklyn next week, with all of the above culminating in a punched ticket to the Big Dance. Sounds like a plan, no?

--Three guesses who the first player was out on the floor shooting 2 hours before tipoff? Answer later on in the program.

-- It’s white towel night at the old UD Arena here ladies and germs. Wave ‘em if ya got ‘em and be loud!

-- Stopped by to say hello to Larry and Bucky. Larry said that he and The Legend have gotten out of the prediction biz, because every time they do it, they are wrong. I told Bucky that the ladder with scissors screwup at SLU reminded me of Bill Russell’s last game as a Celtic. The Green showed up for the 7th game of the NBA Finals and Russell noticed that the rafters in The Fabulous Forum were packed with balloons in anticipation of a Laker championship. Russell saw to it that they were never released and made a point of asking after the game “What are they gonna do with all of those balloons?”

-- Dr. Dan walked down press row and stopped to say hello. He said he was in St. Louis for the SLU game and it was tremendous. Clearly, it’s good to be President!

-- Talked to David Jablonski from The DDN and thanked him for the great job he is doing covering the Flyers. David has embraced social media and new technology and his post-game wrapups that are not behind the paywall make for a very interesting read.

-- Matt Schwade from FlyerHoops noticed that Richmond head dude Chris Mooney was sitting courtside and watching the Flyers during their pre-game shoot-around. “When was the last time you saw that?” he asked.

-- Lotta pre-game chatter and score watching amongst the denizens of press row about the GW/Fordham game and whether the Flyers want a bye in Brooklyn or not. Ended up being all for naught as FU lost a thriller by 3. Sorry kids, but UD ain’t gonna be a 4 seed.

-- The Senior Night festivities were loud and proud as you might expect, especially when DMO and his family walked out onto the floor. Hard to recall a kid who has improved as much over his four year career as Devin has.

-- The Arena is going old school with the “Let’s get ready to rumble” intro tonight. Gotta like that as it gets the crowd totally juiced.

-- Richy starts out 0-2; Sibert gets the party started with a trey; Kavs goes up hard and comes down harder on a foul on a RU layup attempt but the Spidey shooter misses the pair. 3-3 with 15:11 left after an Anthony three. This slow pace favors the Mooneyites. 5-5 after a DMO J; 7-5 good guys after a DMO tip.

-- Kendall Pollard says hello with a layup for a 9-5 Flyer lead; it is 9-7 with 9:00 left…the first team to 10 wins! Dyshawn Pierre has yet to do anything in this tilt other than pass. J-Rob with the “good hands” D which results in a Spiders foul but he misses the front-end of a 1 and 1. DMO three gets the crowd back into it but then he airballs his next long bomb. Vee for two but it could be for three after the hoop and the harm…it is. 17-10 UD. Vee’s layup forces young Mr. Mooney to burn a TO. Flyers up by 9. Vee drives again, gets fouled once more and drains the pair.

-- Richmond has 10 points after 15 and a half minutes. Kyle Davis with a 3 point play and the Arena is up for grabs. 28-15 at the under 4:00 media TO. Sibert for three and the lead is 12. A phantom foul on the Flyers draws the wrath of the Faithful and Anthony misses both FTs just to make the point. KP for three; Devin Scott gets his name in the paper with some great footwork. There have been an inordinate number of travelling calls thus far, most of them on Richmond. KP’s heave at the buzzer misses and it is 34-19 Flyers at intermission.

The Elder Swampette is in the house from Chicago, sitting in the next to the last row in 410.

Question: First player on the floor 2 hours before tipoff?

Answer:
Scoochie Smith

-- Pierre gets banged and splits a pair—at least he scored. DMO for three; KP not for three. Richmond is scoring way too easily to start the half, if you ask me. DMO with the lefty hook shot—it’s helps to be a southpaw-- followed by a brick three. 41-25 at the under 16:00 media TO.

-- DMO puts back a Vee miss to restore order; Davis airballs a three for Richmond but DMO still leads him 2-1 in that department. Scoochie travels but RU still leads in those calls. Scoochie gets fouled on the way to the hoop and it is 43-29 at the under 12:00. He makes both.

-- KP goaltends on a Spidey layup; Kavs hammers Allen but he only makes 1-2 and the lead is 13; Archie uses a TO with 9:27 left and the Flyers leading by 11. Need a good possession here—let’s see what they draw up. It’s Sibert for three on a kickout from DMO, who then makes a pair of rim rattler FTs to get it back to 14. KP gets called for a bogus PF bodying up a Richmond big guy. 50-39 with 7:00 to go.

-- Kendall Anthony drains another uncontested three pointer and the lead has shrunk to 8 with 6:20 to go. Need to buckle down on defense like they did against SLU. Vee with the twisted pretzel layin and Allen answers immediately. UD is working a lot harder for their points than Richmond is right now. UD in the bonus and Vee can’t connect. Vee with another acrobatic masterpiece gets it back to 10 with 3:30 on the clock and UD with the rock.

-- Vee for three! The Flyers catch up to RU in the foul department in a hurry but Richy can’t cash in at the stripe. 57-44 and Kavs will go to the line with 1:12 remaining. First one is not a swish but it counts. Matt will stroll back to the FT line, this time for two. Makes ‘em both and the seniors all check out up by 16 with 60 seconds remaining. And it is Brian Vonderhaar time kids! Warm up the bus!

60-48 is your final.

Post Game

DMO said it felt great to get the win, as that was their main goal. As for Senior Night he said it was “unexplainable.” What has been the key to the Flyers success of late? “We’re together. We don’t listen to that outside noise.”

Vee has had a “great experience at UD.” He felt what sparked UD’s turnaround was that they thought positive. “You gotta go with it and roll with it.” When asked about his patented floater he said that he has always had it and that it is a straight push shot that he learned in HS to shoot over bigger guys.

Archie said it was a very emotional week at UD and he was worried about tonight. The seniors, especially Vee were instrumental in the win. He feels that DMO is the most improved player in the country and “is the poster boy for how we do things.” He’s matured and his all-around game has changed dramatically. The Flyers “need to take a deep breath.” As to what was responsible for the 9/10 finish in conference play, he had one word:

Character

Archie told Andy Katz earlier in the week that he deleted the Ken Pom ap on his iPhone and it’s not coming back. He was stressing too much over stats and they were not good. He finally figured out “it’s not about the numbers, it’s about the kids.” Archie went on to say that “the last 10 days have felt like it is tournament time.”

Great effort; great win; tremendous way to send off the seniors.

On to Brooklyn!

That’s it “From the Swamp.”

Swamp, arrive in Newark at 10:20 am Thursday. Have tickets for Thursday and Friday with my son and some of his UD fraternity brothers. Willing to brave the cold and snow of NYC/Brooklyn to see the Flyers keep playing inspired basketball.
