Flyers With 4-0 Shutout over Richmond

DAYTON (OH) -- Sophomore forward Ashley Campbell tallied a hat trick in the A10 opener, but just as important was the clean sheet for the defense as the Dayton Flyers topped Richmond 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader with the UD men's team at Baujan Field. Dayton improves to 6-4-1 while the Spiders fall to 3-6-2.

Longtime Spider head coach Peter Albright saw his team's chances nosedive this year when All-American forward Becca Wann was forced to sit out the remainder of the season due to repetitive concussions. What could have been an A10 contender has turned into a season of damage control. Unfortunately for his team, the void was felt for much of the evening against Mike Tucker's squad as Richmond failed to generate any sort of dynamic offense to persistently threaten the UD back line.

That wasn't the case for Dayton's offense as they got off to a hot start soon after the opening kickoff. Ashley Campbell brought a ball across the face of the goal mouth and rifled a shot to the upper corner of the post to put UD up 1-0 in the 8th minute. Unassisted on the play, the early lead put Richmond in a bad spot and with an offense that was not designed to play from behind.

The Flyers had decent possession over the next 20 minutes of the half and worked the ball on the ground with good results between the 18s. While Dayton controlled the important moments, they struggled to generate quality shots on goal -- let alone shots at all -- once they encroached upon the Spider goal box. Part of that was Richmond's intent to send numbers behind the ball and keep the play in front of them, but UD also contributed to the low shot volume by not taking full advantage of the width of the field.

Quality shots are what matter however and Campbell once again proved that axiom in the 33rd minute with another top-shelf finish from 18 yards out that put the Flyers up 2-0. Both goals were struck as well as they could be, leaving Spider goalkeeper Emily Kelly with no chance to stop either one.

With some distance on the Spiders, UD maintained control of things throughout the remainder of the half. Halftimes stats favored UD in shots 9-2, while Richmond earned the only corner kick.

The second half started much like the first -- another hot start for the Flyers. Campbell earned the hat trick in the 49th minute on a finish from inside the box, set up by a quality Nicole Waters feed near the baseline.

From there, UD put things on cruise control. The Flyer back line did well to turn away chances when chasing Richmond strikers moving forward. Even better, outside defenders Allison Klinefelter and Meghan Scharer stepped up with numerous pick-offs of forward passes designed to hit the Spider forwards at their feet.

Stephanie Emery made the score 4-0 in the 60th minute after cleaning up ball substitute Spider GK Lisa Hozey gagged out of her mitts directly in front of the box. Emery was there for the easy tap-in.

With the match salted away, UD brought the subs off the bench to spread the playing time around. Over the last half hour of play, Richmond generated a few dangerous scoring chances of their own, but frosh GK Elizabeth James had one of her better efforts of the season with two important saves -- including one when left isolated on a striker that got behind the last defender.

Richmond out-shot Dayton 7-5 in the second half, but UD converted four goals on a total of just 14 shots -- eight of them on frame. While the Flyers were out-cornered 4-2, the staff will gladly take better finishing on fewer chances, than 40+ shots against Wright State with only a handful on target.

It was an efficient 90 minutes. The defense stepped up and played clean soccer while the offense took advantage of the few quality looks they had. Dayton should have generated more shots, but all things considered never really had to -- the game was in control so early in the match that forcing things simply wasn't necessary.

Campbell is finishing much better than a few weeks ago and Waters continues to show why nobody else on the team can do what she does -- control possession in the middle. While Waters' offensive numbers are not earth-shattering, she's consistently setting up the teammate who eventually sets up another teammate for a goal-scoring opportunity. Boxscores don't favor her, but she's in full favor with A10 scouts.

Freshman Diarra Simmons came off the bench late in the second half and showed some good things, using her big frame to win balls in the offensive third.

Juliana Libertin had one of her quieter performances, but drew defensive attention like a pig draws flies. She opened up space for others by just co-habitating on the pitch.

Now 4-0-1 in the last five matches, the Flyers have some momentum for the first time all season. The challenge is to keep the pedal down as the A10 season continues. Next up is A10 newcomer George Mason a week from tonight at Baujan Field.
