Flyers Dominate Previously Unbeaten Davidson 2-0

The Dayton Flyers hosted unbeaten Davidson College in the Wildcats' first A10 match as a new conference member. They sent em' home with their tails between their legs.

UD dominated Davidson start to finish for a thorough 2-0 shutout victory in the nightcap of a Flyer soccer doubleheader Saturday evening at Baujan Field. A pair of second half goals were the difference as Dayton improves to 5-3-2 (1-0) while Davidson falls to 5-1-2 (0-1).

The Wildcats were one of the few remaining unbeatens in D-I soccer, including a big victory over then #3 Virginia two weeks ago. Currently #15 in the Soccer America poll and ranked #19 by Top Drawer Soccer, Davidson provided the Flyers a great opportunity to measure themselves against one of the best teams in the A10.

Once the match got underway, there was little doubt however as to which team looked the part. Dayton had a better work rate over most positions on the field, using the hustle to win loose balls and get the offense moving forward.

UD did well playing through midfielder Amass Amankona as "maestro" used his quick foot skills to open up the field with the dribble-drive, or dishing to teammates overlapping in the attack. Davidson had trouble holding their defensive marks in their own half of the field, something the Flyers took advantage of with balls down the line that led to crosses in the box. While quality shots on goal were few and far between, UD controlled the tenor of the match on offense and defense -- especially in the back line where Davidson showed very little punch.

The persistent offense generated a bevy of corner kicks, some of them more dangerous than others. Dayton's best chance came on a scrum directly in front of the goal box, but Davidson GK Matt Pacifici was in the right place at the right time -- luckily -- to stop a point-blank redirect inside the six.

Halftime stats favored UD in shots 6-2 and corner kicks 5-1.

If Dayton could duplicate their first half performance, chances were good they could earn a result. Things turned out even better: the Flyers dominated the final 45 minutes with two goals and convincing field play.

Greg Enstone got the scoring started in the 53rd minute on a beautiful defense-to-offense sequence that resulted in a Dillon Nino cross from the right side of the box after quality buildup from the back line. His cross found Enstone lurking near the six yard line and a leaping header pushed the ball back to the near post for the 1-0 Dayton advantage.

UD's next tally was just as good.

Ryan Peterson played a ball into the box just three minutes later, dishing to Kissima Bojang who finished with aplomb to the low left corner to put the Flyers up 2-0 and in total command of the match.

From there, UD found a rhythm and began to truck Davidson over the next 12 minutes, winning tackles, finding open players, and creating jail-break opportunities on offense with unselfish team play. The Wildcats did well to keep the deficit at 2-0 because they were looking fatigued and overwhelmed at the same time. It was Dayton's night on the strength of well-balanced team play where no one carried the freight and everyone pitched in with quality minutes.

Defensively, Maik Schoonderwoerd orchestrated the central defense and helped the Flyers secure their sixth shutout on the year -- improbable considering UD surrendered eight combined goals in a pair of exhibition losses and two setbacks to start the regular season. Goalkeeper Chris Froschauer was only tested a couple times as UD out-shot Davidson 15-8 overall, including a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

UD remains at home next weekend with a Friday evening match against George Mason. The Patriots are currently #20 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll. It's another stern test for the Flyers, but UD is playing excellent soccer over the last three weeks and should go into the match with a mountain of confidence.

I for one would appreciate if front page articles identified the sports team in the title.

Of the five articles on the front page currently, one identifies the sport of volleyball in the title, one identifies women's soccer in the byline, and the other three are unidentifiable without reading the entire article.

Mods, thank you for your attention to this matter.

We can probably make that happen. But, you should be reading them all!
