Smile Dayton Tops Richmond in 4-3 Shootout

DAYTON (OH) -- The Dayton Flyers had their hands full with Richmond on Friday night, doing just enough to secure the wild 4-3 victory to improve to 7-2-1 (1-0) in the A10 opener for both schools. The lead changed hands three times in the first half and UD tacked on an insurance goal in the second half that proved to be the difference.

The Spiders, entering the match with just one win overall and two goals in the last four contests, saw their season-best scoring output fall just short despite a bicycle-kick goal and a brief 2-1 lead in the first half. Before the Sportscenter highlight however, UD capitalized first and jumped out to the 1-0 lead just four minutes in.

Organizing a set piece from 35yds out, Simeon Zapryanov knocked a perfect service to the far left post that found the head of Alex Torda. Torda redirected it to the far right post in textbook fashion to finish off the sequence.

Dayton was in the lead and just starting to play well. Momentum would change early and often however and the Spiders struck back less than two minutes later when Brennan Lincoln dialed up an ESPY-worthy bicycle kick from 15yds out that found the upper 90 of the far left post to tie the score. On a field that has seen many fantastic goals over the years, Lincoln's strike may have been one of the best individual efforts of them all.

Tied at 1-1, the Flyers still looked composed and worked hard to find holes in UR's back line. There were plenty of those to exploit too. Several strong balls in the box had potential but the close calls couldn't find the back of the net. Richmond capitalized on a defensive miscue in the Flyer back line that forced goalkeeper Tyler Picard 20yds out from goal. Jake Russell beat everyone to the ball and slotted it into a vacant net to put the Flyers down 2-1 in the 12th minute.

Ordinarily, it might be panic time. Down a goal to a team that's struggled mightily all year -- not just to win but to score -- perhaps it was Richmond's night to live the charmed life and pull off the big upset on the road. To UD's credit however, they stuck to their guns and continued to hammer away in the attacking half of the field. Consistent pressure generated consistent scoring chances and it was only a matter of time before UD answered.

Torda earned his second goal of the night in the 32nd minute with another header, this time to the near post off a UD corner kick. The match now tied, things swung in UD's favor for good just 12 seconds later when senior Joe Olwig fought for and won a loose ball 25yds out and slotted it past charging goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson for the 3-2 lead. In the blink of an eye, the Flyers went from staring at a halftime deficit to enjoying intermission with a one-goal advantage. It could have been 4-2 by halftime with a bit more luck in the box -- the Flyers had quality chances that suffered from bad luck or poor timing.

With a defensive effort that wasn't up to par, Richmond had the wherewithal to find a second half equalizer. To put the match away for good, Dayton needed an insurance goal to provide a cushion. The goal would eventually come, but it took 25 minutes after the restart to sort it all out. Inside that second half window, the run of play evened out a bit and the Spiders generated some quality chances of their own. A shot from the right side caromed off the crossbar and another opportunity was turned away by a timely clearance.

Florian DeCamps put the Flyers up 4-2 in the 71st minute on a great individual effort that started 30yds out and ended with a chip over the goalkeeper from 12yds away that tucked inside the far post. DeCamps battled a defender for the initial loose ball, stuck with it, and out-muscled the competition for possession and a narrow window to pull the trigger.

Up 4-2, everything appeared to be well sorted, but the Spiders added a workman-like goal in the 86th minute with a short header at the near post to make it a 4-3 match. Dayton played long ball and wasted clock near the corner flags to salt the game away.

For the match, UD outshot Richmond 18-14 and earned a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Fouls and saves were basically even, making Friday night's game very competitive from start to finish. Both sides showed a lot of character battling from behind. Dayton pushed its winning streak to five matches and remains unbeaten at Baujan Field over the last two seasons. Off to a good start in the A10, Dayton can now prepare for George Washington on Sunday afternoon. Richmond should also take a lot of positives from Friday's match despite the loss. They played harder and looked far more competitive than their resume' suggested.

The Flyers must continue to win. With an NCAA at-large bid almost completely out of reach, Dennis Currier's squad must position themselves for a high seed in the A10 postseason tournament. A Top-2 finish ensures a bye in the first round and remains Dayton's best chance to punch their ticket to their first-ever NCAA berth.
