Who's Got Next? We Do

BEVERLY HILLS (MI) -- Well, that was really fun on Friday afternoon, wasn’t it?

Dayton’s chances for success vs. WVU before the game certainly did not pass “the look test”-- especially if you happened to have a ‘look’ at this Joe Lunardi video preview:

http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=398...goryid=3988418

However, once the ref tossed the ball up in the Dome (and CW won the tip), the end result was clear for all to see:

-- The frustration in the WVU players’ eyes (especially Alex Ruoff) when they slowly realized that the Mountaineers couldn’t run the offensive sets that had gotten them this far.

-- The determination of the Dayton D to pressure WVU for 40 minutes, which, as BG noted before the game, is all that you are guaranteed in the NCAA Tournament…40 minutes.

-- The will of the Flyers to bend but never break, refusing to surrender the lead once they took it for good at 4-3 early on in the game.

-- The knowledge, thanks to Gus Johnson, that Charles Little’s nickname given to him by his teammates is “Dinosaur Head.”

-- The suddenness of the many-splendored Chris Wright thunder dunks, especially the one-on-none breakaway which was perfectly posterized here:

Several people on the UD Pride MB have already nominated this shot as the cover for next year’s Flyer media guide. Whattya say, Doug Hauschild?

-- The senior leadership displayed by Charles Little, scoring at will on what Bob Huggins would later describe as “really hard shots” when it mattered most.

-- The ever-so-slight change in expression on BG’s face when he finally knew that UD had this game in the bag.

-- The befuddled ‘what-the-heck-just-happened?’ gaze on Huggy’s mug at the post-game press conference. He clearly didn’t have a clue.

-- And then, the sudden about-face of all the so-called experts on ESPN like Digger Phelps, who no doubt probably gave himself a hernia jumping on the Flyers’ bandwagon.

-- Speaking of which: where are you Joe Lunardi?

-- But the best part to me of the whole deal was that the Dayton victory shut that smug Big Least goofball Jim Laise at WVSports.com up until next October. Charles Little would like to thank you for the great bulletin board material, dude.

-- The best possible end result of this contest? WVU’s Athletic Director Ed Pastilong calls up his UD counterpart Tim Wabler and says:

“Screw it…let’s play a home-and-home starting next year.”

Just an insane amount of positive press and TV coverage coming out of this 6/11 upset…here is my favorite from Pete Prisco of CBS Sports.com:

What are the chances that BG and staff were on the phone Friday night talking to Juwan Staten, Adreian Payne, Jalen Steele, Ralph Hill, Allen Payne, Isaiah Sykes and the other 2010 recruits about the game?

Can you say 100%?

So now, as BG said in his post-game presser, our reward for beating WVU is that we get to play Kansas, the defending National Champions.

Note to Kansas fans: Before the WVU game, here was the Mountaineers’ fan reaction to CBS Sports.com's Gregg Doyel’s prediction that the Flyers would make it past WVU (and KU…and MSU) to the Elite Eight:

Just a suggestion: you guys might want to consider easing off of the condescending tone just a tad on your own MB, as it makes you sound an awful lot like them thar Mountaineers:

http://boards.kusports.com/showflat....page=1#1359357

Especially that part about ‘already preparing the scouting report for MSU or USC.’ Trust me, you do not want to mess with the woof gods.

A little history note for you “Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk” fans:

The last time our two teams met was in the 1968 NIT Finals…and you know what happened then, dontcha?

Something else to chew on: the team that UD beat before they faced the Jayhawks in that title game? The WVU Mountaineers. Kinda spooky, huh?

What do we know about KU? Sherron Collins is really fast; yeah, well so is London Warren. Cole Aldrich is big; so are Kurt Huelsman and Devin Searcy. Bill Self is a heckuva coach; so is Brian Gregory.

Chris Wright is a beast; sorry, there is no retort for that one, KU fans.

The beauty of the NCAA –- and you can ask Utah, Florida State, Wake Forest and Rat Face at OSU about this -– is that the games are played on the court and not on paper or on some stupid college message board.

Should be a good one:

Thank you for your efforts on this Swampy. It was great reading. If I were Gregory I would not let the team watch tv or read a newspaper until after Sunday's win.
